Just 2 blocks west of the Arch is the Old St. Louis Courthouse built in 1839. The original courthouse was built in the 1820s but within 10 years was outgrown by a population that had tripled in the same time period.
The second courthouse, seen here, is the site where in 1846 Dred Scott and his wife sued for their freedom from slavery in a free state.
The courthouse is absolutely stunning inside and out. You can take a tour on your own or ask one of the very helpful staff personnel about this historic structure. Be sure to ask about the fossils in the floor of the east entrance!
